Insured Conventional Loan Vs FHA-Which Is Better

April 21, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

There are many factors that go into a loan decision-credit scores, down payment, debt ratios, etc. One big question is whether you should consider buying a home with an insured conventional loan using 5% down or applying for an FHA loan with 3.5% down. The information below might make that decision easier. In fact, if FHA continues to raise the cost of their monthly mortgage insurance-known as MIP-the decision may start to favor conventional loans with PMI-private mortgage insurance. Remember, everyone’s situation is different. This information just gives you one more way to look at financing your purchase.

Underwater Homeowner Refinance Programs Extended For 1 More Year

March 21, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

FHFA Extends Refinance Program By One Year

Washington, DC — Federal Housing Finance Agency Acting Director Edward J. DeMarco has announced an extension of the Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP), a refinancing program administered by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, to June 30, 2012. The program was set to expire on June 30 of this year. In addition, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will make the following adjustments to their programs: Freddie Mac will exempt HARP loans from their recently announced price adjustments and Fannie Mae will conform their eligibility date to May 2009.

The program expands access to refinancing for qualified individuals and families whose homes have lost value. HARP has grown over the past year. In 2010, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac purchased or guaranteed more than 6.8 million refinanced mortgages. Of this total, 621,803 were HARP refinances with LTVs between 80 percent and 125 percent. This is up from 190,180 in 2009, when HARP began.

For more information on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac refinance activity, see FHFA’s Fourth Quarter 2010 Foreclosure Prevention & Refinance Report. Additionally, homeowners can visit www.MakingHomeAffordable.gov for more information on the program.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency regulates Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the 12 Federal Home Loan Banks. These government-sponsored enterprises provide more than $5.9 trillion in funding for the U.S. mortgage markets and financial institutions.

WHY Pick RE/MAX?

There are lots of reasons why you might choose to select one agent or company vs another. Unless you have a best friend or relative who you “have” to use, I would like to show you how I am different. I believe I have an excellent value proposition as to why you would select me as your agent and RE/MAX as your company. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you and discuss how I can help you meet your housing goals-whether it be buying or selling. Interview a couple of agents, you will see there is a difference. You may wonder how does RE/MAX stack up within the Twin Cities. The attached PDF’s will give you some market share information as well as agent productivity-based on a 2010 compilation of the numbers. While these are just some of the metrics on which to base your decision, success does leave clues. How can I help you?

Gifts and Grants can be considered towards borrowers funds on certain 3% down conventional loans

March 14, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Yes, you read that right. I just got an email today from a leading mortgage insurance company that is willing to underwrite this loan. You will need at 740 or better score. But, what an opportunity. In many ways, this is like FHA, but with a little higher credit threshold. The KEY difference, besides credit score, is the lack of an upfront MI (mortgage insurance) premium and as well as a smaller required monthly premium. This product could be a game changer for the MI company and conventional loans.

Purchase 80/10/10 and 80/5/15 STILL exists

March 13, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

As of this post, the 80/10/10 and 80/5/15 can still be done. While underwriting has allowed it, it has been very difficult to find a second mortgage product that would write a 5 or 10% second mortgage. Well, after many phone calls, we have sourced two lenders who at this time are willing to offer the second mortgage. One is a bank and the other is a credit union. As with EVERY program, the rules can and do change at any given moment. The key to both product is extremely high credit scores and a file that utilizes conservative ratios. If you don’t have at least a 700 score, this might not be something you can utilize at this time. For the 80/10/10, you will need a 740 or better score.

I found a cool resource at http://www.FHFA.gov. If you go there, in the middle of the page you will find something called the Home Price Calculator. You input your home purchase information in terms of State, quarter in which you purchased and the quarter in which you’d like to get the valuation. Next, you hit calculate, and it will show you a chart. While it isn’t specific to YOUR exact home, it does give trends for your area. If you want specific information-specific to your home-within the Twin Cities metro-give me a call and we can discuss your situation. I can then give you guidance on what the value might be.

4 Tips to Determine How Much Mortgage You Can Afford

February 14, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

By knowing how much mortgage you can handle, you can ensure that home ownership will fit in your budget.

Here are six surefire ways you can get your finances in order before you buy a home.

Homeownership should make you feel safe and secure, and that includes financially. Be sure you can afford your home by calculating how much of a mortgage you can safely fit into your budget.

Instead of just taking out the biggest mortgage a lender qualifies you to borrow, consider how much you want to pay each month for housing based on your financial and personal goals.

Think ahead to major life events and consider how those might influence your budget. Do you want to return to school for an advanced degree? Will a new child add day care to your monthly expenses? Does a relative plan to eventually live with you and contribute to the mortgage?

Still not sure how much you can afford? You can use the same formulas that most lenders use, or try another of these traditional methods for estimating the amount of mortgage you can afford.

1. The general rule of mortgage affordability
As a rule of thumb, you can typically afford a home priced two to three times your gross income. If you earn $100,000, you can typically afford a home between $200,000 and $300,000.

To understand how that rule applies to your particular financial situation, prepare a family budget and list all the costs of homeownership, like property taxes, insurance, maintenance, utilities, and community association fees, if applicable, as well as costs specific to your family, such as day care costs.

2. Factor in your downpayment
How much money do you have for a downpayment? The higher your downpayment, the lower your monthly payments will be. If you put down at least 20% of the home’s cost, you may not have to get private mortgage insurance, which costs hundreds each month. That leaves more money for your mortgage payment.
The lower your downpayment, the higher the loan amount you’ll need to qualify for and the higher your monthly mortgage payment.

3. Consider your overall debt
Lenders generally follow the 28/41 rule. Your monthly mortgage payments covering your home loan principal, interest, taxes, and insurance shouldn’t total more than 28% of your gross annual income. Your overall monthly payments for your mortgage plus all your other bills, like car loans, utilities, and credit cards, shouldn’t exceed 41% of your gross annual income.

Here’s how that works. If your gross annual income is $100,000, multiply by 28% and then divide by 12 months to arrive at a monthly mortgage payment of $2,333 or less. Next, check the total of all your monthly bills including your potential mortgage and make sure they don’t top 41%, or $3,416 in our example.

4. Use your rent as a mortgage guide
The tax benefits of homeownership generally allow you to afford a mortgage payment—including taxes and insurance—of about one-third more than your current rent payment without changing your lifestyle. So you can multiply your current rent by 1.33 to arrive at a rough estimate of a mortgage payment.

Here’s an example. If you currently pay $1,500 per month in rent, you should be able to comfortably afford a $2,000 monthly mortgage payment after factoring in the tax benefits of homeownership.

However, if you’re struggling to keep up with your rent, consider what amount would be comfortable and use that for the calcuation instead.

Also consider whether or not you’ll itemize your deductions. If you take the standard deduction, you can’t also deduct mortgage interest payments. Talking to a tax adviser, or using a tax software program to do a “what if” tax return, can help you see your tax situation more clearly.

Rebuilding Credit To Get A Mortgage

January 14, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Often, especially in this market due to the recession, we find potential home buyers who have had a life event or “bump in the road” that affects their ability to obtain a new loan. If you want to buy a home, you will have to have a certain number of reporting trade lines and for certain length of time. MOST mortgage programs require 3-5 trade lines and a minimum of two years of reporting. The other criteria is the actual credit score-which generally has to be 620, 640 or even 660 as it is all lender dependent. A manual underwriting where they use alternative credit such as rent payments, cell phone bill, utility bills, and the cable bill might be able to be used-but only with a few certain programs and lenders. So, the best bet is to re-establish credit as quickly as possible. HOW ABOUT NOW!! Don’t wait-it will only extend the time until you are going to be eligible. I have put together a list of resources that might be helpful. This list is only a starting place for your research. If you find another good resource please post it in the comments below so that the list can be expanded upon.

Mortgage Insurance May Still Be Deductible For Some Buyers

January 6, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Yipee-It looks like mortgage insurance will remain deductible for some home buyers. When we look buying a home, you need to consider all aspects. One main one is mortgage financing. There are ways around mortgage insurance by doing split loans-like and 80/10/10 for example or LPMI-which stands for lender paid mortgage insurance-which means the interest rate is higher. Rather than confuse the matter with all the options-some of which may have no bearing on your situation-just give me a call. I would be happy to help you do an analysis so you can make the right choice. Click the link below to read the latest news about MI(mortgage insurance)

Is There An Opportunity Right In Front Of YOU

January 4, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

I just watched an amazing video which I’ve posted below called the Money Tree. There are so many different interpretations. One that struck me was that people are oblivious to opportunity that is right in front of them. How many of us are looking for something that we already have or is within our reach? How many people are NOT buying real estate today when they could be looking at this as an incredible wealth building opportunity for what it is over the long term-assuming properties rise again in value? I was showing homes this past weekend. It was incredible to see townhomes in great communities selling for 40-60% less than they had sold for just as little as 5 years before. Luckily for my client, we are going to make an offer and ACT. Watch this video and don’t let the opportunities in your life pass you by. Don’t let life pass you by. Happy New Year and may 2011 be your best yet!

December Is The Time To Reflect

December 17, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Are each of us doing all we can to make the world a better place? Many of us have our favorite charity and organizations we support. RE/MAX is a very large sponsor of Children’s Miracle Network. Many people don’t realize how much has been given. Each time I sell a home, I automatically donate a portion of my commission to this organization. Other RE/MAX agents like myself contribute from their commission checks as well. Together, with RE/MAX we have collectively given over 100M. I would encourage everyone to consider finding an organization they believe in and make giving a part of their life. Just imagine what the world could look like?

Getting Ready to Sell Your House

December 14, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

While most experts see little good news in 2011’s housing market, economic downturn is no reason to neglect maintenance on a home or lose sight of future plans to relocate.

The critical issue is planning intelligently for what spending you do now to make sure it’s worth your money later. And even if your plan to sell your property is more than a year away, it’s not a bad idea to get your finances in order as well. In the coming months, you’ll be addressing tax issues, so it’s a good time to look at your overall financial picture with a qualified financial planner as well as a trained tax expert.

The October MacroMarkets Home Price Expectations Survey doesn’t see a meaningful increase in home prices until 2012, though appreciation is expected to go up on average more than 14 percent through 2014.

As you wait for your opportunity, here are some ideas to incorporate in your planning:

Check your credit report and score: If you plan to finance a new property once you sell, it makes ample sense to lower your debt and clean up any discrepancies in your credit data well in advance of any move into the market. Remember, you are entitled to one free copy of each of the major credit reports in any given year, and you can obtain them from one resource – www.annualcreditreport.com. Avoid all the services with expensive TV commercials calling themselves “free” – if they ask for a credit card number, you are not getting a free report. Also, so you can spot discrepancies and keep a watchful eye on the possibility of ID theft throughout the year, stagger your receipt of your reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion (the major credit ratings agencies) at different points during the year.

Get a home inspection: Go through local channels – lenders, friends, real estate professionals you trust – to find a licensed home inspector who can look over your property and help you develop a list of potential repairs and upgrades that you can do economically given that you’ll have months before you put the property up for sale. Checking your home’s structure – roof, foundation, windows, etc., as well as its mechanical parts – heating/AC, installed appliances, plumbing – can give you an early warning system for expensive repairs that a prospective buyer’s inspector would find anyway. Try now to make sure there are no problems that will kill a deal later.

Ask a trusted broker for advice: Structural experts can determine whether your home is working properly – real estate brokers may or may not be equally expert at spotting these flaws. But generally, they can be trusted on matters of appearance – whether the grounds around the home are well maintained as well as whether the home’s interior is inviting to the eye of potential buyers.

Don’t overinvest in improvements: In the 1990s, spending $40,000 on a kitchen in many neighborhoods could recover that amount of money and more in the final sales price. In today’s market, those payoffs are a distant memory. Experienced brokers generally do a good job steering you away from overpaying for improvements, but there are other resources to doublecheck the spending you’re planning to do. Remodeling Magazine’s latest Cost vs. Value report provides estimates on specific projects by region, including projections on cost recoupment.

Appeal your property taxes: If you’ve never appealed your property taxes before or have not done so in many years, do so when your appeals period is open. Lowering your taxes as much as possible may help make your property more salable.

Declutter and don’t re-clutter: Start making a list of items you might donate – furniture, clothing, household items, etc. Make sure they’re in good condition and if you’re having trouble setting a value, check on eBay or other auction sites to see if you’re being fair to yourself while not drawing the attention of the taxman.

Minnesota First Time Home Buyer Tips

November 17, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

A buyer in Minnesota, and specifically the Twin Cities area-Minneapolis/St Paul, should consider visiting the board of Realtors site at http://www.MplsRealtor.com On the tab regarding market activity, they will be able to click through and find out aggregated information that is compiled into city specific reports. For example, Minneapolis real estate will be broken down into the various areas of our MLS. All the data mining and statistical information is done for you. This is an excellent resource, as it gives you average market time, sales prices, and percentage of list to sales price.

Another resource is Http://www.Hocmn.org This site provides information for homeowners in distress and explains all the Minnesota laws regarding the foreclosure process and debt forgiveness. Visit this site and download the PDF fact sheets. Buying distressed properties today represents an opportunity. Understanding how the law works in our state is imperative.

Crime reports are also a useful tool. Some cities have the information aggregated and reported better than others. Minneapolis is one of the best. If you visit the Google search engine and type in “shots fired Minneapolis” you will be taken to the crime statistics area. You might want to use this to determine how close in proximity your desired home sits in relationship to previous criminal activity. Along that same thought, if you want to research registered sex offenders, visit http://www.corr.state.mn.us

Another site that can help source down payment assistance and grants for Minnesota home buyers ishttp://www.Workforce-resource.com This links with the MLS and actually becomes specific to a property in which you are interested. You will find that not all lenders will work with these programs. So, you may need or want to switch lenders if you want to access some of these special programs.

Lastly, we have sourced various discounts with local & national companies. For example, at this time, I can get you a discount coupon at Lowe’s, Pods, and other national firms. Many companies have discounts arranged for their agents to offer buyers and sellers. Not every Realtor is aware of this, so you might require that they check in with their corporate office and find out-or you could just work with me.

Top Seven Tips For Home Buyers

November 16, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Recently I was asked to create a list of top tips. Here is my list. I have been selling homes for over 25 years. I hope these help you make better choices and improve your real estate making decisions.

1) Before you begin to search for a home, always get prequalified FIRST. Seek out an experienced mortgage broker to arrange your financing. Even if you think you want to use a large bank, at least see what a broker has available. In fact, you may find that a broker can deliver the same mortgage to you cheaper from the “same” large bank you were considering. Generally, brokers have access to wholesale pricing as well as more products and programs than traditional large banks or in-house type lender arrangements that you find at large real estate companies. Besides pricing, you might find special grant money or unique loans that otherwise would not be made available. Also, regarding special programs, if you can identify the cities or areas you might be interested in, you may want to call the local HRA (housing redevelopment authority) and see what they offer. Today, we are seeing special programs for purchase or post purchase rehab of foreclosed and short sale properties from the cities themselves. The FHA 203K loan is a program that can be used for rehab on any home. It is not tied to any city or any property specific status. There are a couple of versions of this loan-limited and extensive rehab. FHA loans have size limits that vary based on the geographic location of the property. Not all lenders make this loan available, so seek it out if it is of interest.

2) Look at all homes for sale. Don’t exclude any specific sector of the market. Initially, you may have wanted to run away from short sales, foreclosures, and auctions. Ultimately, once you get a feel for the marketplace, you may actually decide to focus on distressed properties. When buying in the distressed segment be prepared for a more complex process. Knowing that upfront will help. Depending on the community, almost 50% of the transactions are not “traditional” sales. Distressed sales often sell for what the market will bear, whereas traditional sellers may be unable or unwilling to adjust to the realities of the market. Until job creation comes back and our economy starts growing beyond anemic levels, expect distressed home sales to be a large part of the market. Frustration may set in but don’t allow it to influence an otherwise good decision in your purchase. Don’t be put off by some dirt and light repair, analyze the structure and the location.

3) Look to your Realtor as a partner. Loyalty works both ways. An agent only gets paid upon a successful closing. We only stay in business with happy repeat clients and referrals. Most Realtors will work extremely hard for you if you work exclusively with them. Agents work on commission, so they need to know that they will eventually get paid for their time invested in helping you find the right home. If you are an investor and you approach five different agents to “call me” when you get a really good deal, you will probably never get a call. If on the other hand, you work with one agent who you assume is competent, you will get a phone call when they see something that meets your criteria.

4) If you are an investor or want to become one, seek out agent representation from someone who knows the rental property market. The rental real estate game can be rewarding but can also cost you a lot of money and aggrevation if you make a mistake. How can an agent who has never been a landlord really give you good advice on how to buy and manage rentals? Not all agents have the same level of experience. This is a recommendation not to be taken lightly. You want to be “educated” not provide someone an education at your expense.

5) Be prepared to engage technology in your search. Twenty-five years ago we used MLS books and did open houses. Today, we use virtual tours, websites, blogs and auto generated emails to deliver properties to your in box. The internet opens up information to everyone in a very user friendly way. If you are a younger buyer, you are probably engaging in texting, email, and video. The agent you choose should be embracing technology and be able to deliver the information you need in the way you want it delivered.

6) Have a home inspection upon an accepted purchase agreement. Don’t come away from the inspection and expect that everything in the home that is reviewed must be fixed at the seller’s expense. An inspection, in my opinion, is to discover hazardous items or items that would require a very large expense to change or repair that you were not initially aware of. Remember, an existing home is not a new home. This means it will have various amounts of obselecense and required repairs. An inspection report is not meant to be a renegotiation tool or checklist. I think the best home inspection is the one that makes you feel comfortable after “getting to know” your new home so you can make a purchase with “your eyes wide open”. Give your inspector permission to tell you are buying a great home. Otherwise, he or she may feel they have to manufacture some item of concern in order to justify the expense of the report.

7) Use an independent title company to do your closing. The buyer is allowed to choose their title company. The captive title companies (known as affiliated business arrangements) which are tied to the real estate or mortgage company are often not as competitively priced as outside vendors. When have you or someone you know ever directed the selection of the closing/title company? If you are like 99% of the people, the answer is never. Yet, this one simple recommendation could save you hundreds of dollars.

Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips – Help For Your Hunt

September 1, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

By S. George

Hunting whitetail deer has always been a popular leisure activity in America, but did you know that their numbers were once almost wiped out due to excessive hunting? A number of stringent game management measures that were put into effect over the years, have helped restore the whitetail deer population again. The male deer is called a buck and is easily spotted because of its lovely prominent set of antlers which grow each year and fall off in the winter again. Female deer are called does and can give birth to up to three babies at one time. Both male and female deer have reddish-white-brown coats in the summer which become a grayish brown color by the time winter comes. White tailed deer in the wild can live up to 11 years and probably even longer. In fact, hunters often find hunting whitetail deer easier as it has been found that once the deer mark their territory; they are inclined to stay there instead of leaving their home even if there is a lack of food.

Must-Know Hunting Tips

Seasoned hunters will tell you that the whitetail deer has a keen sense of instinct and if you want to have a successful hunt; then keep in mind that no precaution on your part is too small or insignificant.

  • Whitetail deer have a highly sensitive nose, which means that they can pick up your scent in a hundred ways. It makes sense to clean any hunting products with a scent free detergent and to avoid smoking or chewing tobacco. If you can’t do without your tobacco, then be sure to rinse your mouth well. Although it may sound weird, these deer can also pick up the scent of urine, so if you want to do it right; take along a plastic urinal bag or a bottle for whenever the need strikes. The slightest smell which seems unfamiliar to them can make the deer run for cover.
  • These deer also notice any movement in a split second and can vanish just as fast. Hunters should camouflage themselves and make the effort to blend in with the natural surroundings. Avoid wearing brightly colored clothes and leave your blue jeans behind. Choose clothes that keep you comfortable and which are appropriate for the weather.
  • Using the right equipment is a must and it’s important to practice with a good quality bow, before the actual hunt. Experienced hunters often advise practicing at a target range first, because you will most likely need to climb trees or hide among the bushes in order to get a close shot. If possible, practice aiming at a fixed target from various angles and heights in order to get a feel of what the real situation will be like.
  • The location of your hunt is of prime importance. Whitetail deer eat often and sleep for long periods during the day. Most hunters prefer hiding in greener cover or in thick brushes as these areas are usually the favorite haunts of deer although it makes sense to stick to a used trail. Seasoned hunters will tell you that the best time to hunt whitetail deer is during the mating season, as bucks tend to search for a mate longer and also because their senses tend to become slightly dull in this period as well. This means that they are likely to be in the open for longer and it gives any hunter an edge.
  • A hunter needs to have a tremendous amount of luck and skill to get a deer on the first hunt. Being prepared and doing your homework is part of the process. You need to think like a whitetail deer, know its hiding spots, water spots and learn how to read tracks. A few trips with a seasoned hunter will teach you the many little tricks that can help you get lucky on the hunt.
  • It doesn’t hurt to spend some time reading about whitetail deer, their habits, and how to have a successful hunt. In fact there are plenty of dedicated whitetail deer hunting magazines which are chock full of practical tips and articles by experienced hunters. If you are bow hunting, then subscribe to a few magazines which have tips or information on how to nail your target using a bow.

And remember – have fun on the hunt!

S. George writes about hunting for various types of animals. She does work for different companies including a company that does various hunting services to help hunters have a great experience, including whitetail deer hunts in the Oklahoma area.

Hunting Utopia – Wisconsin Deer Hunting

September 1, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

By Wesley Locklear

When I moved to Wisconsin from North Carolina in June of 2000. I was excited about the opportunity to go deer hunting. My father in-law and brother in-law both had long traditions of going out the weekend before thanksgiving with the intent of harvesting a huge Wisconsin buck.

I did not own a rifle so I borrowed my father in-law’s 308 and took to the woods. I shot a small 5-point buck. I was hooked. In those days when you bought a deer license you got a buck tag. If you wanted a chance to take a doe you needed to apply for a choice permit. A few years went by and I wanted more chances to bag that big Wisconsin buck. So I started bow hunting.

I met a few local guys playing softball in a local beer league that owned a few acres of private land that was accessible for bow hunting. I harvested a small buck every year. I never really had a chance to bag that huge Buck.

With seasons coming and going the Wisconsin DNR made doe permits more readily available. They made some deer management units T-Zone units. This meant there were special doe only hunts twice a year. At first I thought this was just a chance to spend more time in the woods. But a few years later when T-Zone units turned into Herd Control Units more and more does were taken.

The measures the DNR took to control the herd depleted one of Wisconsin’s most desired resources. I was finally able to harvest a mature 10-point buck with my bow in 2007. But the last two years my deer sightings were way down.

Deer hunting brings in a lot of money into Wisconsin. Not only by selling licenses. Buying guns, ammo, gear, lodging and food brings in millions to the local economy that struggles up north. I hope the DNR makes a change. If they don’t everyone will suffer.

Supreme Court Must Not Allow Local Gun Ban Laws To Stand

December 9, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

White House Gun Agenda Attacks Being Argued In Supreme Court

It’s official Obama was lying, and now White House Gun Agenda Attacks are set to be argued in Supreme Court.

The long-awaited challenge to Chicago’s handgun ban will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court on March 2, 2010 and already it is looking like everyone, on both sides of the issue, anticipates that the justices will rule that the Second Amendment is incorporated through the 14th Amendment as a barrier to local gun bans.

Even anti-gunners appear to realize the notion that the Amendment is incorporated, but want the justices to leave enough wiggle room in their ruling to allow most, if not all, existing gun control laws to stand.

This leaves many hard-core gun rights advocates once again demanding, “What part of shall-not-be-infringed don’t you understand?”
Obama said “I’m not going to take your guns away” and “Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear…I think people can take me at my word.”

Obama sent Holder to the Senate to detail his support for a national gun owner registration scheme and authorizing the government to ban firearm possession for any person by merely adding that person’s name to the terror watch list.

Attorney General Holder aggressively detailed the Obama anti-gun agenda in

  • Holder’s public statements before the Senate Judiciary Committee:
  • Holder wants national, permanent gun registration system.

Holder wants new federal authority to prohibit any person on the federal watch list (reported to be 400,000 names) from buying guns and supports confiscating guns from those on the list who possess them.
Apparently, law-abiding gun owners have nothing to fear unless they own sport-utility rifles, semiautomatic shotguns, handguns and any other firearm that Obama and his anti-gun attorney general don’t like.

Supreme Court Briefs Filed In Chicago Gun Ban Case

The opening brief to the Supreme Court was filed November 16, 2009. The brief advocates breathing new life into the moribund Privileges or Immunities clause of the 14th Amendment. Specifically, an originalist reading of the 14th Amendment dictates that the right to keep and bear arms is a “privilege” and “immunity” that a state must not abridge. The case is expected to be argued in February, with a decision expected by the end of June, 2010.

We urgently need you to make sure your State Attorney Generals is part of this important effort to support the Second Amendment and be sure you tell them, DO NOT TO SUPPORT the City of Chicago gun law banning handguns and requiring the annual taxation of firearms.

Send Blast Faxes and DEMAND All 50 State Attorney Generals support and declare that the individual right to keep and bear arms is protected by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear the case of McDonald v. City of Chicago, and decide whether the right to keep and bear arms secured by the Second Amendment protects Americans from overreaching state and local governments.

Chicago Gun Ban Case to Determine Gun Rights For All States

The Supreme Court case is of paramount importance to American citizens, to see that their constitutional rights are respected not only by the Congress, but by state and local governments.

Obama made public his clear anti-gun agenda in March 2004 in Chicago. Obama voted against Illinois Senate Bill 2165 allowing citizens the right to protect themselves and for local ordinances against handgun possession. The measure passed the Illinois Senate by a vote of 38-20 without Obama’s vote. STOP Obama’s Anti-Gun Agenda now before he can appoint any anti-gun judges.

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) is delighted to bring this case in cooperation with the Illinois State Rifle Association and the four local plaintiffs. We are in this fight because a gun ban is no less onerous to civil rights in Chicago than it was in the District of Columbia. Such a law cannot be allowed to stand unchallenged.

Protecting our gun rights is expensive and it’s impossible to put a price tag on. This time freedom will cost $250,000 to defend your Second Amendment rights in this challenge to the Chicago gun ban. SAF stands firmly committed to defend these rights and we are asking you to stand with us and we need your help to stop the anti-freedom extremists now!

FAX All 50 State Attorney Generals Now and Donate The $250,000 Needed For SAF To Defend Second Amendment Rights At The Supreme Court!

At issue is a 27-year-old Chicago law banning handguns, requiring the annual taxation of firearms, and otherwise interfering with the right of law-abiding individuals to keep guns at home for self-defense. The case was brought on behalf of four Chicago residents, the Second Amendment Foundation, and the Illinois State Rifle Association.

Last year, in the landmark case of District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court held that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms. However, as that case concerned the actions of the District of Columbia government, a federal entity, the high court was not called upon to decide whether the right bound states and local governments. Over the years, almost the entire Bill of Rights has been held to apply to state and local governments by incorporation of the Fourteenth Amendment.

“The freedoms we enjoy as Americans are secured to us against violation by all levels of government,” noted Alan Gura, of Gura & Possessky, PLLC, lead counsel for the McDonald plaintiffs. “State and local politicians should be on notice: the Second Amendment is a normal part of the Bill of Rights, and it is coming to your town.”

Otis McDonald, a Chicago resident since 1952 who led the fight to integrate his union local in the 1960s and is a plaintiff in the case, welcomed the news.

“I am grateful the Supreme Court has agreed to hear this case,” McDonald said. “I now pray that the Court secures me and all other law-abiding citizens the right to defend ourselves and our families.”

FAX All 50 State Attorney Generals Now and Donate The $250,000 Needed For SAF To Defend Second Amendment Rights At The Supreme Court!

Chicago attorney David Sigale commented, “The City of Chicago cannot take from millions of Americans the fundamental freedom of self-defense in one’s own home. We are confident the Court will stand on the side of the law-abiding citizens and the Bill of Rights.”

“We’re pleased to hear that the Supreme Court has decided to take a look at Chicago’s gun laws,” added ISRA President Don Moran. “In this time of economic uncertainty and increasing lawlessness, the good people of Chicago ought not have to choose between violating Chicago’s gun ban, and protecting themselves and their loved ones.”

The Chicago gun ban challenge will likely be among the most closely watched constitutional law cases in decades. At stake is not just the question of whether the Second Amendment secures the right to arms against state and local governments, but also the extent to which the Supreme Court preserves individual liberty against encroachment by state and local governments.

Oral argument will possibly be scheduled early this coming winter, with a decision expected by June 2010. Gura will argue the case on behalf of the McDonald plaintiffs.

The Second Amendment Foundation is the nation’s oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, The Foundation has grown to more than 650,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control.

Obamacare May Target Gun Owners

December 2, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Who might be the next victim of Obamacare? Gun owners.

Government health care reform “will most likely dump your gun-related health data into a government database…that can preclude you from owning firearms,” said Gun Owners of America, in an email notification to their members, shortly before the health care debate on Saturday. GOA said that diagnoses such as post-traumatic stress disorders or other mental illnesses could be a reason the government uses to charge you more for health insurance under the public plan, or as part of co-op regulations.

Larry Pratt, executive director of GOA, said the chances of Uncle Sam using his power to regulate health care based on gun ownership was even better because Kathleen Sebelius is the head of the Department of Health and Human Services, the agency that would be in charge of specific health care regulations and their enforcement. Sebelius has a long anti-gun history, responsible for vetoes of concealed carry bills in Kansas.

“Gun owners are likely to be in there with fat people,” said Pratt. It wouldn’t be the first time gun ownership has been tied to health regulation. GOA claims that over 150,000 vets with post-traumatic stress disorder are currently on a list that prohibits gun purchases. But Obamacare would expand government health care to millions of additional Americans.
Calls to Sebelius’ office were not returned, though a member of her press office laughed out loud when questioned about the prospect of health care being tied to gun ownership, saying, “that’s crazy.”

But Michael Cannon, director of health policy studies at the Cato Institute, said such regulations were quite possible. The problem stems from government’s overriding cost-benefit assessments and their take on health issues. “This legislation will politicize anything that has to do with health and health insurance claims,” he said. “The anti-gun lobby has, for decades now, tried to paint firearms owners as unsafe. It will only be a matter of time before they start making that argument in the new forum of health insurance.”

The Center for Disease Control has been one of the government agencies pushing gun ownership as hazardous to one’s health, and Pratt, and the National Institute for Health is catching on. “They would be required to evaluate the compulsory health mandates that are contained within this legislation,” said Pratt. “That could make life uncomfortable for people.”

Whitetail Deer Hunting For Beginners

October 30, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

By Razvan Jr

Whitetail deer hunting is one of the most popular hunting genres in the entire world with more and more enthusiasts every year. For a first time whitetail deer hunter it can be a rather difficult thing to do that is why a few tips and tricks about this type of activity are needed in order to start out with decent results.

Experienced hunters recommend checking the hunting equipment when going into the stand, not later when a buck will eventually walk out. Check if your scope is clear, the shells in the chamber or if you use a bow, check if your bow will draw back properly. There are many issues to take into consideration that is why we strongly advise to prepare well ahead.

If you plan on hunting whitetail deer in a food plot or a large field it is recommended to do it during the late hours of the day. Remember that deer like heavy cover so it is advisable to try and clear a path through the cover that you consider these animals might be using. The whitetail deer usually prefers using the easiest routes possible. Once you have set up a path, hunt over the built path in a hunting tree stand.

If using deer calls isn’t your cup of tea ( mainly because you are afraid of scaring these animals ), it is advisable to use it only after you see a deer that you are not willing to shoot. Once you have done so, you will notice that it doesn’t scare them and you will observe their reactions. Be sure to use the most suitable calls, otherwise the animals will get suspicious.

The best advice possible is to hunt whenever you have the possibility. Experience is crucial, only by going out there in the wilderness you will learn more about their habitat, feeding habits and other characteristics that you will eventually use in your advantage. We strongly suggest that you follow our advice and the next time you have the possibility to hunt, don’t hesitate, you know what they say: practice makes perfect and this is statement is entirely applicable for hunting not only whitetail deer but other animals as well.

When you are about to hunt in a new area, it is advisable to hunt at a new stand each day for a short period of time as this is the most efficient way to learn about the deer movement routes. If you spot a deer and shoot it and afterwards you jump it up a very short distance from the position you have made the shot, it is advisable to stand back and give it time to take its last breath, if you shot it during the late hours of the day it is recommended to wait overnight.

If you plan on hunting whitetail deer with a bow, experienced hunters recommend doing it from a tree stand because it is way more efficient in comparison with hunting from ground level. Another advice, use only one pin because it is easier to aim high or low on the whitetail deer than attempt to remember to use a specific one when the large one walks out.

We hope that our suggestions will come in hand and on your first attempts on hunting these animals you will get at least decent results. Remember; practice every time you have the chance.

Razvan Marian Jr. is a whitetail deer hunting enthusiast and has plenty of years of experience in the field. He is now sharing his whitetail deer hunting tips with others at http://www.whitetaildeerhuntinginfo.com

Deer Hunting Equipment Used by Successful Hunters

October 30, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

By Ronan Bill

The correct deer hunting equipment in the UK and other countries is an essential part of the hunt itself. In today’s market there is a vast array of hunting equipment to purchase for deer and other game. So if you expect your hunting season to be successful, you have to start out with the right type of equipment. Here are a few ideas on how you can have a successful deer hunting trip:

1. The right kind of gun can determine whether your trip is one you will be able to brag about or one that will be a complete disaster. When you go on a hunting trip, make absolutely sure to choose a gun which suits you adequately and will permit you to have a good shoot.

2. One valuable piece of deer hunting equipment is a knife. Find one which will maintain a sharp edge no matter what tasks you may encounter. A knife sheath for carrying will also be a great idea.

3. When deer season opens in the UK, the clothing you choose must suit the climate and hunting conditions in order to have a good hunting trip. Clothing such as a hunting jacket, a good shirt, denim jeans and a sweater are most often appropriate. They should be purchased in forest colours and patterns. Also, don’t forget a comfortable, yet durable, pair of hunting boots and a mask while you are shopping.

If you are in the US and are planning to go hunting, make sure to get the right hunting outfitter for a winning trip: not all of them are the same. Be certain to attain good accommodations. Find out if the food and lodgings are suitable to your preferences. In case your weapons malfunction, are there rifle stores or archery equipment shops in close proximity to where you are staying? Find out about the tree stands and bait sites too. In short, do your homework to ensure you have done everything important for a good hunting trip. After all, if you are paying for it, be sure to get the most from your money!

Whitetail hunting in the UK provides you with a huge selection of firearms. As it pertains to trophy whitetail deer hunting, today’s weapons offer a continuous and bountiful opportunity. A Guide to Deer Hunting Accessories

October 30, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

By John Border

As a deer hunter you should be able to go out and hunt without any hassles in the hunting area. For hassle free hunting you will need to make sure that as a deer hunter you have all the accessories with you.

Of course there is no end to the hunting accessories but there are some things that you just cannot ignore. The main things that you need to have in the arsenal are the binoculars and the spotting scopes. Next item is the knife which is a must as we have a lot of folks who would like to have the field dressing done for the deer.

If you are new to the area in which you are deer hunting then you need to have a map of the area with you. The main reason is that most hunters would not like to be using their time searching their way around the land. Apart from the map now there are GPS instruments available in the market. These can help you enjoy a good hunting stint.

A lot of hunting folks forget about the ropes as an accessory but the truth is that as and when you kill a deer you will need to haul it to your truck. The deer being heavy there is no way that you can have that deer in your truck without dragging.

Binoculars are the most important thing that you should have in your arsenal. The simple reason being that you just cannot any closer to the prey. You need to wait and watch with bated breath for the deer. Binoculars provide you with the much needed closeness. There are several brands which are available in the market so choose carefully. However, that said the first and foremost thing that we need to look at is the magnification of the binoculars. The next is the field of view. These two factors are very important for binoculars to work properly for you.

The other accessories that most deer hunters have are the rattlers antlers and the calls. These two are needed to make sure that you attract the deer successfully.

The other most important thing that you will need is the first aid kit. In the hunting area you can get all sorts of bruises and cuts do the first aid kit is very handy for that.

Last but not the least buy a good back pack to carry all these things or a good belt strap too to hold a few items easily. Use the neck strap for the binoculars.

The author is a hunting enthusiast who thinks that binoculars light transmission and binoculars lens coating are very important.

3 Killer Deer Hunting Tips – No Pun Intended

October 30, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

By Charles Binow

After writing the title for my article, I realized just how funny it really was. Trust me, there was no pun intended there at all. Anyway, if you’re reading this article, then my guess is that you’re interested in deer hunting and that you’d actually like to learn a few things that will help you to come home with something instead of empty handed like you probably usually do. Well, fear not. I’m going to share three of my favorite deer hunting tips that will make your life a lot easier when out there.

Probably the most important tip of all is to find out where the deer will be getting their food from. The reason this is important is obvious. This is where they’re going to be hanging out for the most part. So, you want to find trees with tons of acorns, areas that have a lot of clover and or rye coverings, and of course most of all, you want to look for any trails that you can find. Follow these trails yourself and see where they lead to. More often than not, they will lead you right to your deer.

Okay, as far as actually hunting your deer, you first want to make sure you wear camouflaged clothing. Green that blends in with the surroundings is best, but gray or brown will work almost as well. The key is making sure that it is almost impossible for the deer to see you. This will give you a huge advantage over the deer.

Aside from your clothing, you want to make sure that when you’re waiting for the deer to arrive that you remain absolutely still. When I say absolutely, I mean it. The slightest noise is going to scare the deer away. Now, the problem with doing this, aside from the fact that it’s not easy, is that you are very likely to doze off. This can not only keep you from bagging the little fellow but put you in a lot of danger as well. Trust me, you DON’T want to fall asleep while hunting deer.

I realize that these are pretty basic if you’ve been doing this for a while, but for those just starting out, these are some of the more common mistakes that hunters make. In my signature you’ll find a review of a great guide on hunting deer. I think you will find it most helpful.

Happy hunting.

To your deer hunting success,

Deer Hunting – What You Need to Know

October 30, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

By Peter Gitundu

Deer hunting is one interesting activity. Different types of game can be hunted but in the USA, though the deer is widely hunted to control the number of deer at the ranches. There are many hunting fields in Texas and one can use the internet to find the ranches that they will find most suitable.

After going through a couple of ranches, one has to make a booking so that they can deer hunt. There are laws that have to be taken into consideration when deer hunting so as not to do anything illegal. Different ranches will provide you with information about places to find the deer. One also gets to learn the art of dressing freshly shot deer. The dressing of the deer helps to keep the deer fresh while one hunts.

There are many varieties of deer to choose from including the Mule, trophy and the Monster white tailed deer. From the ranches, one can get information on where to find specific breed of deer. There are other places that one can visit to enjoy the deer at large without hunting them. These kinds of scenes will always leave one wanting to come back just to enjoy the wonderful sight especially with Texas deer hunting!

One of the main reasons why Texas deer hunting is popular is to control the numbers of deer to manageable levels such that they can survive. Some places have large herds and hunting them will reduce them to a level that they are able to freely survive without having to fight for food. One should therefore be informed about the numbers they are allowed to hunt. With this in mind, take time and enjoy the hunting experience!

Deer Hunting Scent Free

October 30, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

By Todd Janssen

I know a lot has been written about eliminating human scent while deer hunting. It still amazes me that so many hunters neglect this aspect of hunting big game. Although human odor cannot be 100% eliminated, it can be minimized or reduced to the point that deer will not notice it or even react to it. The reason that the human odors can never be completely eliminated is because we are naturally producing human odor molecules 24 hours a day.

I think we can all safely say that the # 1 defense mechanism for deer is their nose. Deer not only use their nose to avoid danger, they use it during mating season and also when foraging for food. They are constantly checking and testing their surroundings with their sense of smell. It has been said that deer may avoid an area for up to a month after being spooked by human odor.

When hunting whitetails, the most important thing that you can do is minimize your odor and other odors that you may pick up along the way. How many times have you witnessed hunters filling up with gas with their hunting clothes on or perhaps sitting in the restaurant right before the hunt? Now get this, it has been documented that deer have winded hunters from ¾ of a mile away! That is a very good reason for not only bow hunters to eliminate their scent, but gun hunters as well.

Every big animal has a sense of smell that is hundreds, if not thousands times superior to humans. Hunting whitetail deer, mule deer, elk, and other big game animals will require the hunter to recognize this fact and take steps to ensure that they be as odor free as possible.

For the sake of comparison, one could use this analogy: A fire sprinkler system consists of sprinkler heads that are designed to trigger when the heat level reaches a certain temperature. If the temperature does not reach a certain point, the sprinklers are not activated. In similar ways, deer have a certain threshold of human and foreign odors. When the threshold reaches a limit, the deer will avoid the area altogether or go on high alert and bolt. On the other hand, if steps are taken to minimize these odors, deer will not react to them or notice them at all.

Depending on if you are actually hunting or not, scent control should be considered when setting up stands or just scouting your hunting area. The closer you are to the actual hunt, the more concerned you need to be with scent control.

In future articles I will get into the actual products that are on the market today for scent control that you can use to fool that big buck. The most respected whitetail hunters in the world use these products all the time and you should be too. You will not only begin to see more deer, but have them close enough to shoot with a bow.

Mule Deer Hunting? Things You Must Learn Before Your Hunting Trip

October 30, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

By Abhishek Agarwal

A brownish-gray in color and stocky in build, mule deer are spread far and wide across western Canada and western USA, as well as to the eastern states of Wisconsin and Texas. They have got their name from their long and mule-like ears which can attain lengths of 10 inches. Though white-tailed deer hunting is also a popular sport, people put a higher preference on mule deer hunting, as their population is much larger. Also, the meat of the mule deer is delectable! As a matter of fact, mule deer hunting is extremely popular in North America!

Keeping track of the animal’s habitat and habits will lead to a more successful hunt.

Mule deer choose various habitats. Generally, they prefer being high up in the mountains. Only in the case of the Chisos Mountains (Texas), they exchange positions with the white-tailed deer and settle down in different parts of the valley. Mule deer can also be found at the edges of forests; they do not venture into deep forests mostly. Forest areas are therefore best for mule deer hunting.

The rusty red color of their coats which is maintained throughout the summer, changes color during late fall. The mule deer and the background seem to appear as one since the color of their hides is grayish tinted. Mule deer hunting therefore poses a challenge during this open season!

They are larger than the white-tailed deer. The average height is about 3 1/2 feet. The female specimen weighs the same as a male white-tailed deer. She weights about 100 to 150 pounds. The males or bucks range from 125 to 400 pounds. Despite its bulk, a male mule deer can run at a speed of 40 miles per hour. The hunter has to be alert that the buck does not come charging at him when mule deer hunting!

Since they are not very finicky about food, these animals can feed on any kind of vegetation. If they could choose their diet, they would go for yew, willow, berries, Douglas-fir, grapes, mushrooms and aspen. In contrast, the white-tailed deer have choice preferences regarding food. So they are easier to hunt down than their bigger cousins.

Conception takes place around November; so the young are born between April and June (spring). By the time the mule deer hunting season comes round, the fawns are around six months old. The population grows in leaps and bounds because four fawns can be born at once, unlike two fawns being born to a white-tailed doe. Since they are plentiful, very few regulations are placed on mule deer hunting. Mule deer kills need not be logged even on land without a special permit in the state of Texas. The same is not the case with the white-tailed deer, which has a smaller population.

October Deer Hunting Tips

October 30, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

By Dale Bender

Bow hunting seasons are now open in most states. Here in Wisconsin we have been hunting for a few weeks now. We have passed up shots at some smaller bucks. The bigger deer have failed to show themselves yet.

Now is the time to hunt close to the bedding areas. The deer have sensed the change in the seasons and have noticed the increased human activity in the woods. The mature bucks will most likely stay bedded until just before dark, so set as close to the bedding area as you can without spooking the deer. I watched a doe come out of the swamp ½ hour before dark, but no bucks came out.

This weekend us here at AWH will be heading to Iowa for our first hunt down there this year. Our goal is to bring back three big does. The farm we hunt has a lot of does and we need to our part in trimming the herd. By shooting a few does, we will help keep the buck /doe ratio more balanced. This will cause more competition for the breeding bucks, come November. This will make the bucks to respond better to calling, rattling, and decoying. The second thing that shooting does will do is that there will be less deer eating the farmers crops, and it’s good to keep the farmers happy. He will be more apt to let you hunt if your do him a favor by shooting more deer. So if you have a doe tag, now is the time to fill it. You can then be very selective with your buck tag.

October is also a good time to hunt different stands then you normally hunt. I have a tendency to hunt a certain stand that has always produced good bucks in the past. But it is set close to the bedding area and I believe that the bucks will sit tight till dark and then they here you get down from your stand and walk out of the woods. When this starts happening it’s time to let that stand rest for a while. I will then hunt other stands that I don’t hunt too much. You might catch deer leaving the bedding area from a different direction and get a shot at them by hunting the other stand.

We have scouted out some new hunting areas the last time we were in Iowa, so this weekend we will hang a stand or two in the new spots and hunt them a few times. You must always be looking for new spots to hunt, unless you buy the land yourself, you will eventually lose it. We always are looking at new places to hunt. On this hunt we will hunt the mornings and evenings, and then scout during the middle of the day. Hopefully we will come across and great, new honey hole.

As October progresses, It will be the time that I start hunting mornings, I don’t hunt mornings too often during the early part of the season. I have found that the mature bucks have usually gone back to the bedding area by first light. But as we get to the later part of the month you will start to see some scrapes and rubs made by the younger bucks as they start sensing that some does are coming into heat. This is the time to start doing some calling and rattling. This technique has worked for me in the past. I hunted a Saturday morning in late October, I was sitting in my funnel stand and I decided to do some rattling. A half hour after I rattled I looked to the north towards the funnel and a deer with nice polished antlers was looking my way. I got ready and as if on cue, it moved in front of me and I drew when it went behind a tree. It stepped out into one of my shooting lanes that we had cut way back in August, and I put the pin on it and I watched my arrow disappear into its chest. It was a great feeling when all are hard work paid off and everything went to plan.

Are you still shooting your bow? It is always a good idea to keep shooting during the season to keep sharp. I keep a target in my truck and before I go into the woods I shoot a few practice arrows to make sure that I am still on. You don’t need to shoot 100 arrows every day; you just need a few here and there to keep yourself sharp.

If you are experiencing the dreaded “October Lull” have faith the deer will be on the move again. Hunt some less disturbed stands, hunt at different times, keep shooting and remember that the rut is only a few weeks away.

Good Luck and shoot straight,

Deer Hunting Tips

October 30, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

By Anne Clarke

The best deer hunting tips are the ones that you figure out for yourself and can offer to others. After all, few things feel better than finding the way that works for you. Of course, until you reach that point, here are some deer hunting tips to help you get there.

Deer Hunting Tips:

· Deer are generally crepuscular: they are often active at dawn and dusk and sleep during the middle of the day and night.

· This does not, however, mean that you will not see them feeding during the middle of the day.

· Bucks are more often during hunting seas

· Go scouting. Do this during early to late summer. When you scout, be as careful as if you are actually hunting. Stay quite and do not leave much scent.

· Find the food source that the deer will be eating during the hunting season.

· Look for trees that will have the most acorns.

· Look for areas with greens like clover or rye covering the ground.

· Look for deer trail routes. The ones with the freshest tracks are the best.

· If you are going to set up any sort of hunting stand, be sure to set it up pre-season, before the deer start feeding in that area. Otherwise, you can scare them off.

· Mark your “hot spots” on a GPS.

· Also be sure to take lots of notes. Do not expect to simply remember everything. You want to write down everything that you find.

· You can find where the bucks are if you scout during the pre-season, right after the bucks have rubbed the velvet from their antlers. During this time, the rut (mating season) a buck is going to leave more markings on trees than he will afterward.

· Look for areas with thick and dense brush. It is in areas like this that deer like to sleep. You can set up on the outskirts of such an area… somewhere where you will be able to see better.

· Remain still! Do not move unless absolutely necessary!

· Do not fall asleep! This can be tricky when you remain so still, but falling asleep not only will lose you your deer, but it can also be quite dangerous if you are up in a tree stand.

· Use special products to mask your scent. Deer have an excellent sense of smell.

· Keep the wind direction in mind. Stay downwind of whatever feeding or sleeping spot, etc. you are “staking out.” Constantly check for changes in the wind.

· Wear a harness if using a tree stand.

· Move the site of your tree stand around. You do not want your deer to start associating deer stands with humans!

· Try to avoid walking a long a deer trail or even walk parallel to one. Take the back route… walk up streams, etc.

· Be sure to always be ready. Make sure that you have checked your equipment right when you get to the stand, not once a deer is already out!

· The majority of deer are shot downwind from a food source.

These are only a few deer hunting tips. There are actually many deer hunting tips available on many different websites from many different, experienced hunters. Before hunting in a certain spot, is a good idea to ask locals hunters for their own, personal tips. Different areas can vary, and everyone has his or her own tricks of the trade.

Deer Hunting on the Move: Stillhunting for Deer, or, Getting off the Stump

October 30, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

By Paul D. Smith

Deer hunting on the move, or stillhunting, is commonly misunderstood as to what it is and how to go about it. It is stalking deer, not waiting on a stump or in a blind for the deer to come to you. It can be the most rewarding deer hunting experience you can do. It can also be the most frustrating, since it is a skill which requires you to slow everything everything – your sight, your breath and your walking gait. But the payoffs go beyond the hunt to your better enjoyment of nature itself.

This article will talk about some things I’ve learned while hunting deer in the Vermont woods and oak mast ridges of Wisconsin. These few simple techniques can be used on your next hunt – whether you choose to stillhunt or not, the principles are the same. These techniques will also make your deer hunt a richer experience. It’s all about: you’re outdoors – enjoy the scenery, hunting or not.

Generally, as deer hunters, we think of one thing when we hunt, and that is deer. Not deer in general, but that deer. We are aided in this compulsion by our brains, and our eyes. Let’s talk about eyes first.

Hunt Deer with Soft Focus – See Them as They See You

We see as all predators do – forward, and tightly focussed. Take a look at your average housecat and watch it stalk something. It pursues its object with its eyes narrowed and every muscle relaxed, yet steeled at a moment’s notice to pounce. We share with the cat and all predators having our eyes in the front of our head, designed to focus on a single thing.

However, deer, and all prey species, have eyes designed to detect motion. Deer and all prey species have eyes on the side of their head, and this aids in perceiving motion first, long before the animal can make out whether what they see is a threat, or just some pattern-breaking motion in the woods. When stillhunting for deer, we must adopt to the way they see. We must see motion first, patterns out of sync second, and the deer last. The only way to do this is to relax our focus and broaden our field of vision.

Here’s how to practice. Stand facing a wall, about six to eight feet away from it. Stare hard at a spot on the wall. Raise your arms, index fingers extended, fully out to the side from your head (and slightly behind). Now, keeping your arms straight and your index fingers extended, bring your arms slowly in front of your face. Notice the moment when your fingers come into view – this is your field of vision (FOV).

Now, turn to the wall again. This time, soften your focus so that your eyes, while seeing objects or spots on the wall, do not lock on any one spot. Repeat the index-finger practice. You should see your fingers enter your FOV much earlier than before. It is this type of sight – gained through practice, for it isn’t natural to us anymore – that allows us to see changes in woods patterns, motion – in short, to see deer out in the distance, possibly before they see us.

Now, onto walking.

Walk Toe-Heel, not Heel-Toe

YOu see it all the time – the hunter walking through the woods as if he’s on rice paper.

It doesn’t work. As a hunter, you’re going to make noise. But then, so do deer and other game. So does anything living and breathing in the woods. What you want to avoid is making the rhythmic gait a hunter makes when he’s running, usually after a deer, or doing everything he can to be quiet, when he doesn’t yet see one.

Walking toe-heel is the way to walk, because the palm of your foot can be more flexible in its response to the softwood twigs and deadfall underfoot – like deer, whose hooves make relatively light contact with the forest floor. Walking heel-toe makes for a heavy, stiff step – a human step. Walking heel toe, take a few steps, pause, and, using the soft-focus described above, take in the environment, in a holistic way. Above all else, if you find yourself entering in to a steady, rhythmic gait, break it up. You also want to avoid any obviously sounds coming from anything man-made, such as metal or hard plastic. Bottom line – brushing past an oak stump is o.k. Marching in cadence is not, nor is that canteen banging against your hunting rifle strap buckle.

Know the Wind

Finally, walk into the wind. Yes, this is rule 1. But many hunters, especially those used to staying in a relatively insulated hunting blind, forget this cardinal rule. I’ve stood with my bow drawn on a buck 10 yards away, with the buck clearly trying to figure out what the heck this would-be rambo was up to – only to watch it spring to life once the wind shifts, and thanksgiving was a bit – thinner that year.

Don’t even bother still hunting on blustery days, with no prevailing winds.

The bottom line, when you are hunting deer in this way, is to get used to is slowing yourself down, for hours at a time, and softening your focus to “deer hunt” for motion – not deer.

But act like, see like, deer, become more a part of where you are, and you will reap many rewards – whether you bag a deer or not.

Why I Own a Gun

October 26, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

This just about  says it all.  Now I won’t have to explain my guns and the use of  them…
PEOPLE ASK WHY?

image

Why I Carry a  Gun
My old grandpa said  to me son,’ there comes a time in every man’s life
when he stops bustin’  knuckles and starts bustin’ caps and usually it’s
when he becomes too  old to take an ass whoopin’.
I don’t carry a gun  to kill people.
I carry a gun to keep  from being killed.

file0001

I don’t carry a gun  to scare people.
I carry a gun because  sometimes this world can be a scary place.

file001

I don’t carry a gun  because I’m paranoid.
I carry a gun because  there are real threats in the world.

file002

I don’t carry a gun  because I’m evil.
I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to  see the evil in the world.

I don’t carry a gun  because I hate the government.
I carry a gun because  I understand the limitations of government.

file003

I don’t carry a gun  because I’m angry.
I carry a gun so that  I don’t have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be  prepared.

file004

I don’t carry a gun  because I want to shoot someone.
I carry a gun because  I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere  tomorrow afternoon.

file005

I don’t carry a gun  because I’m a cowboy.
I carry a gun  because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a
cowboy.

file0062

I don’t carry a gun  to make me feel like a man.
I carry a gun because  men know how to take care of themselves and the
ones they  love.

file007

I don’t carry a gun  because I feel inadequate.
I carry a gun because  unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am
inadequate.

I don’t carry a gun  because I love it.
I carry a gun because  I love life and the people who make it meaningful to  me.

file008

Police Protection is  an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves.
Police do not protect  you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens  and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

file009

file010

Personally, I carry a gun because I’m too young to  die and too old to take an ass whoopin’.

While figures over  the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with  firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since  criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a  dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian  politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased,  after such monumental effort, and expense was expended in successfully  ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the  other historical facts above prove it.

You won’t see this  data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this  information.

Guns in the hands of  honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws  adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note my  fellow Americans, before it’s too late!

The next time someone  talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson.

With guns, we are  ‘citizens’.  Without them, we are ‘subjects’.

file013

During WWII the  Japanese decided not to invade America  because they knew most  Americans were ARMED!

If you value your  freedom, please spread this anti-gun control message to all of your  friends.

file014

The  purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense.  The sword is more important than the
shield, and skill is more  important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is  supplemental.
SWITZERLAND ISSUES  EVERY HOUSEHOLD A GUN!   SWITZERLAND ‘S GOVERNMENT TRAINS EVERY  ADULT THEY ISSUE A RIFLE.   SWITZERLAND HAS THE LOWEST GUN  RELATED CRIME RATE OF ANY CIVILIZED COUNTRY IN THE  WORLD!!!
IT’S A NO BRAINER!  DON’T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO  MAKE ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY TARGET.
I’m a firm  believer in  the 2nd  Amendment! If you are too, please forward.

You probably won’t see this again in your life time!    “Be sure to show this to you children or grandchildren…”

These animals  were  photographed just north of the Wisconsin border on  a highway  near Marenisco , MI …
Once in  awhile there is  an opportunity to take in a piece  of nature that you may never see… In these days of unrest and turmoil it is great to see that GOD still produces some wondrous beauty.

att5457708att5457719att54577210The odds of seeing an albino moose are astronomical and to see this in the upper peninsula of Michigan, near Wisconsin, is even greater than astronomical. To see two of them together is nearly impossible.

We wanted to share these photos with as many people as possible because you will probably never have a chance to see this rare sight again.

This is a really special treat, so enjoy the shots of a lifetime.

MANLY BBQ………. A Man’s Grill!

October 13, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Now this is a BBQ guaranteed to get everyone’s attention… ..I think it should be towed with the barrel facing backwards… then you wouldn’t have to worry about anyone tail-gating you….I don’t know for sure but my guess is the owner is from Texas !!!!!!

file000BBQ RULES
We are about to enter the BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking activity . When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion:

Routine…
(1) The woman buys the food.
(2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.
(3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill – beer in hand.
(4) The woman remains outside the compulsory three meter exclusion zone where the exuberance of testosterone and other manly bonding activities can take place without the interference of the woman.

Here’s the –Important part:
(5) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL..

More routine…
(6) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.
(7) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is looking great. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he flips the meat

Important again:
(8) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.

More routine…
(9) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table…

(10) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.

And most important of all:
(11) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.

(12) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed ‘ her night off ‘ and, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there’s just no pleasing some women!

The Obama-ACORN Anti Gun Conspiracy

September 4, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

ACORN — the Association of Community Organizations for Reform — a publicly funded national organization is using your tax dollars to actively interfere with the Second Amendment exercise of gun rights in New Jersey and elsewhere.

ACORN went public with its gun control activism when it intervened in an unsuccessful attempt to defend Jersey City, New Jersey, a hot bed of anti-gun rights extremists, to disarm its citizens with a local gun control ordinance. ACORN pushed for stronger local gun restrictions that were already struck down by the New Jersey state court as a violation of state law.

Obama and ACORN’s interest is in disarming law-abiding citizens.

It is an outrage that this group has intervened to defend an anti-gun ordinance that has already been declared illegal by the court. So long as ACORN accepts one penny of public funding, the organization should remain absolutely neutral on social issues, political campaigns and especially legal actions defending the right to keep and bear arms.

For the past few election cycles ACORN has clearly grown more partisan toward the radical political Left. ACORN’S PAC, in fact, endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president, even though their tax-exempt status prohibits endorsement of political candidates. That’s hardly surprising since he used to serve as their legal counsel and he taught the group about community organizing. ACORN and Obama are lockstep in seeking to destroy our Second Amendment rights.

We call upon the FBI to expand the scope of its ACORN investigation and focus on the group’s involvement in the Jersey City case.

We support Ohio Congressman John Boehner’s request that the White House immediately block all federal funding of ACORN activities until this group’s questionable activities are fully investigated. We want to know how they are paying for attorneys, and why Seton Hall’s Center for Social Justice and the Public Interest Law Center are providing legal assistance to ACORN for this effort.

ACORN has, since 1998, received an estimated $31 million in government funding. Yes, Obama knows a great deal about ACORN and its role in the bailout mess. He is a central figure in the left-wing ACORN exploitation of financial institutions to pressure them to make high risk loans. The very same left-wing ACORN that was sued for voter fraud in our last presidential election.

Obama’s presidential campaign paid more than $800,000 to a front of ACORN, currently under investigation in a dozen States for voter registration fraud and bribery schemes, for “get-out-the-vote-efforts”;

Obama co-sponsored legislation called the “Helping Families Save their Homes in Bankruptcy Act of 2007″– that was supported by ACORN and protects them from prosecution and any responsibility for causing the largest financial crisis since The Great Depression.

“Bad enough that ACORN is implicated in fraudulent activities in several states, but now an ACORN chapter in the Garden State is working against the ability of New Jersey gun owners to exercise a constitutionally protected individual civil right to own a handgun,” said former NYPD detective, Sid Frances.

This is still the United States, not a socialist gulag. Public money should not be given to private organizations which then turn around and utilize that funding to usurp the electoral process and erode constitutionally guaranteed civil rights.

The fact that the federal government would even consider using ACORN as part of its 2010 Census to disenfranchise gun rights supporters is cause for Americans to be very concerned.

All that seems to be on the minds of Anti-Gun Obama and at the offices of gun control extremists is figuring out how to invade your privacy to erode and eventually destroy the right, and the means, of self-defense.

Like all other threats against our freedoms, we must rise and cut off all federal funding to ACORN.

In order to stop Obama and his fellow gun-grabbers-we need to let the Congress know with thousands of faxes telling them to stop ACORN and leave guns alone.

Americans like you who understand what our Founding Fathers envisioned for our nation…and who are willing to fight to defend our Constitution and for what it stands.

So please, help the Second Amendment Foundation and me defeat those who wish to gut and trash the United States Constitution.

Help me flood the U.S. Senate with a sea of FAXES big enough to drown each and every Senator willing to vote away the Second Amendment.
